For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights may have been
the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, but when
it comes to telling the truth, they have shown that they are not
above lying to whoever they want, whenever they need to, in order
to get a job done.
While watching Episode 1, many people were surprised at Qui-Gon
Jinn's nonchalance at using the force to manipulate others to further
his own cause. However, anyone who has paid close attention to his
pupil, Obi-Wan 'Ben' Kenobi, would have noted that the Jedi have
a long- running legacy of this kind of behavior. Manipulation, deception,
and many other acts of deliberate misuse of power are the hallmarks
of the Jedi Knights, it seems. They are a veritable fountain of
untruths!
Let us go back to the first movie, Star Wars: A New Hope, to chart
the pattern of lies that Ben Kenobi seems so fond of:
"Your
father wanted you to have this when you were old enough,
but your uncle wouldn't allow it."
This statement is obviously untrue. How could Anakin/Vader have
wanted Luke to have his old lightsaber if Vader did not even know
Luke existed? And if Anakin/Vader had known about Luke, then why
didn't he tear the universe apart looking for him all those years?
This was obviously an attempt by Ben to give Luke a sense of entitlement
and destiny, and to get him to enlist into the Jedi Knights.
"A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until
he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi
Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are
all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force."
This is probably the most famous of lies, where Ben Kenobi twists
the truth into a revisionists version of history. Faced with the
fact of his own failure, Ben could not bear to tell Luke the whole
truth, opting instead to set Luke up for a traumatic encounter three
years later. 'A certain point of view?' Yeah, right--Jedi propaganda
is more like it!
